I have to admit that I’m not a political person. I neither follow politics nor do I care to. I have limited interest mostly because I do not trust the people that come forward to run for office, I do not trust the electoral process and I cannot compel myself to vote for someone I know does not have my interests at heart. I’ve been proudly apolitical for years listing my political leanings as “trying to live as best I can and find my happiness with whatever government is in power.
However, none of this is a good thing. My thinking is skewed and it’s actually quite bad. The role God sees for us in a political system is not just to turn away, close our eyes and pretend injustice and corruption aren’t happening. Even if we can afford to focus on the things of God and leave the things of Caesar to Caesar (Matthew 22:21), we are called to love one another, and there are those more vulnerable who are more affected by poor leadership and so for their sakes, we are compelled to care. Besides, even if we are not feeling the pinch of government oppression yet and so can ignore it, one day we will and then it will be our problem in a dramatic way.
It is not enough for us to ignore the political situation and keep living in a non-political bubble. We need to pray for our country and leaders if we want to live a peaceful life filled with progress. We cannot distance ourselves from what’s going on where we live no matter how disillusioned we are with everything happening around us. This doesn’t mean we should get into politics and fight the government (unless we are called to do this). So what does it all mean? How do we change things in our country when we see things going awry. How do we mix our God with our politics.
God is great and God is faithful. It is our DUTY to pray for our leaders everyday. Instead of daily abusing and condemning we should profess change, hope and goodness of the type that comes from God our father in Heaven. We should be PRAYING for our country and it’s leaders, PRAYING for the changes we want to see, PRAYING for the rise of good leaders, PRAYING to see what we should during elections, PRAYING for our leaders at ALL levels.
No matter how hopeless and far-gone the situation in the country seems, we should pray for our government and leaders to rule well so it will be well for everyone in the country. This is how God wants us to live.
1 Timothy 2:1 (MSG)
The first thing I want you to do is pray. Pray every way you know how, for everyone you know. Pray especially for rulers and their governments to rule well so we can be quietly about our business of living simply, in humble contemplation. This is the way our Savior God wants us to live.
